El Bulldog Francés guarda bastante parecido con su pariente británico pero es un más menudo y ligero. Esto no le resta solidez, ya que es un perro fuerte y dotado de un esqueleto poderoso. La cara es chata como la de otros parientes de los molosos, pero no tan arrugada como la del Bulldog Ingles. En ella destacan unos ojos redondos y separados, pero su rasgo más característico son las orejas levantadas, muy parecidas a las del murciélago.

Su tamaño manejable hace de él un buen perro de compañía que puede vivir en un piso, aunque sentirá añoranza de los espacios abiertos si se pasa el día encerrado entre cuatro paredes. Además, su gusto por comer mucho y moverse poco es una buena razón para animarle a hacer ejercicio.

Historia del Bulldog Francés

Tiene orígenes de emigrante. Llevado a Francia por trabajadores textiles ingleses en el siglo XIX, fue cruzado con razas ratoneras del tipo de los doguillos chinos.

Su habilidad como exterminador le valió pronto el aprecio de los comerciantes, que decidieron perfeccionar la raza hasta desarrollar el Bulldog Francés que conocemos hoy.

Pronto se convirtió en el perro más popular entre los obreros parisinos, aunque su encanto también supo conquistar a grandes personalidades francesas como la escritora Colette.

Utilidad del Bulldog Francés

Su pequeño tamaño no es razón para tomárselo a broma, ya que es un forzudo con instinto guardián acostumbrado a atemorizar a los intrusos con sólo mostrarles su cara de malas pulgas.

Es un gran amante de la familia y derrocha una paciencia infinita con los niños participando con entusiasmo de todos sus juegos. Enormemente activo y muy protector, es mejor pararle los pies si muestra un comportamiento demasiado posesivo hacia los suyos, porque puede volverse celoso. La educación temprana hará de él un compañero dócil y adaptable y le ayudará a suavizar la terquedad de su carácter. Este ronquido, tanto despierto como dormido, es característico de la raza pero si el sonido es exagerado o se ve claramente que al cachorro le cuesta respirar, se trata de un defecto que puede acarrearle graves problemas de salud.

Las complicaciones más frecuentes están relacionadas con desproporciones en el tamaño o exceso de peso y pueden ser tan graves como dificultad respiratoria, complicaciones cardiacas y problemas de columna. Todos ellos son fáciles de prevenir eligiendo un cachorro de padres sanos y de tamaño adecuado y vigilando la dieta.

El Bulldog Francés es tan sensible al frío intenso como a las temperaturas elevadas y debe ser protegido de ambos extremos.
